Taking Time to Grow Ourselves

There is such richness when we are witnessed and supported by community, as we learn and grow into what it is to be human, through the various stages of life. Sometimes community comes in the form of a pop-up “village,” during a profound time spent together over several days.

Gift yourself with one of the following opportunities to take some time “out of time” to remember and rediscover something essential about yourself. See the Sparks (events) section below for a list of upcoming Men’s and Women’s annual gatherings.

Sacred Emergence, which supports initiation into adulthood for young women, will take place July 26-August 2. Applications are due by February 15, 2020.

The Gift: Supporting Young Women’s Initiation

There we were, a staff of ten women, ages 31–76, snuggled in to a gorgeous wilderness. Four generous and capable men assisted and protected us. Three experienced wise women had worked for months to take the young ones through this Sacred Emergence, perhaps the most meaningful event of their transitioning lives. The set up was perfect…and, for me, there was a feeling that the spirits came for the most important part, enlivening the place, the ceremonies, the people, the animals and the rivers, along with the trees and flowers that sang each day to us of their love and assistance.

Hard emotional and physical work were the order of the day, and each of us appeared in the morning, willing, generously giving of all our gifts. No matter if it was doing dishes, hauling wood and water, or opening our hearts in trusting ways, each of us was present. We intended to make the entire time one of fierce graciousness so the blessings would flow to the girls who had made themselves available to become women, in the most magnificent sense. And they did! All manner of surprise surfaced each day, in casual exchange as well as in deep ceremony, to bring these young women to places from which they cannot return…nor would they want to.

We cannot fully know what has been wrought, yet we have faith that the transformation will continue for these women, as they grow in grace and truth.

Standing in the Mystery, Bringing Forth New Life

Sacred initiation is a doorway for a young person to become an adult, plain and simple. If done in a good way, a person participating in this ritual will be truly transformed; they will never go back to being the same person they were before. What is it like for an initiate, moving forward into the world as an adult? In 2017, Cassandra Starks of Grand Junction, Colorado, USA stepped through the doorway of Sacred Fire Community’s young women’s initiation, called Sacred Emergence. She is now entering yet another phase of life: she is recently married and is becoming a mother! We caught up with her to ask a few questions.

Sacred Fire: Cassandra, who were you before initiation and what have you become because of it?

Cassandra: I don’t think much changed visibly on the outside after Sacred Emergence. I wore the same clothes, my hair, eyes and skin color were still the same. I didn’t lose or gain any weight. I looked the same. And yet I felt completely different. Something drastic within myself had shifted. I finally felt connected to myself in a way that I never was before. I had gained greater understanding of my values, gifts and passions, an incredible appreciation of what it truly means to be a woman, and was empowered by my emotions and feelings, rather than simply trying to avoid them. Showered with the love, support, wisdom and guidance of women, I began to grow a new understanding of myself and how to be in relationship with others and with the world as a human being.
