Julia Butterfly and The Stand that Changed the World
In 1997, Julia Butterfly Hill took a stand. She climbed a thousand-year-old redwood to stop the clear-cutting of an ancient forest. She didn’t know it then, but she wouldn’t be leaving those branches for the next 738 days.

Why would a young woman risk life and limb and endure isolation, hunger, and the rain and freezing temperatures of the coldest winter in northern California? Why would she continue on even when an angry logger killed her friend and fellow activist by dropping a tree on him? Why would she stay as the lumber company harassed her with helicopters and bullhorns, when she had to watch chainsaws felling ancient trees all around her day in and day out? READ MORE…

How to invite your Friends to Take a Stand
…with Gratitude and Connection
By Madeline Merritt
By now, many of you are familiar with The Stand, the Sacred Fire Community’s call for all people to declare their intention to re-establish right relationship with the living world around them. Many of you have looked into your hearts and decided that you do align with this declaration: that you want to move in the world holding this prayer for community, meaning, and purpose in your lives.
This year is earth-shifting. Many of us can feel it… Suddenly, relationships around us are fluctuating, and we are able to move with more integrity and honor the voice of truth inside ourselves. Old barriers that we used like dams against our feelings and emotions are breaking down, and the floodgates of love and acceptance have opened. Maybe we are feeling sorrow or need for deep revolutionary change, but these needs are calling us sweetly, home. READ MORE.

PULSE: Like family…and Yet…
This community has become like a family to me, and yet at times I don’t know exactly where I belong. I don’t have any lineage or tradition or spiritual manda to fulfill.
It leaves me feeling like I cannot truly be a part of things that everyone else in the family is doing. I often find myself not feeling included.
I battle my mind telling me that I’m not in the cool clubs, I’m not important enough, not wealthy enough, not valuable enough. Not allowed to be privy to what the “cool kids” are talking about. It’s like a middle school nightmare all over again. But once I get over the mental crap, I realize that I’m really just a little sad. READ MORE.

May in the Sacred Fire Community Down Under.
In mid-May, David Wiley the Elder (and David Wiley the Younger!) brought the Ukilái Men’s Retreat to Alice Springs, a town situated on indigenous land cherished with 60,000 years of unbroken indigenous ritual.
It attracted men not only from our small town (pop. 27,000), but from all around Australia, and even one from the US! READ MORE.

Lifeways Programs: Men’s Retreat (Ukilái)
Men really need to voice what matters.
Two weeks before the retreat was due to begin, we had seven men confirmed. I knew about nine more that I felt would benefit deeply from it.
I kept reflecting: “How does one entice men to an event that they don’t have a frame of reference for?”
Meanwhile, I needed to visit some aboriginal men out on the homelands 300 miles away in the remote western part of the central desert. READ MORE.
