The Hill Where People Gather Around Fire

In July 2016 people came from near and far to attend a special Fire Speaks event, hosted by the New Freedom, PA Sacred Fire community. On that occasion, those gathered were treated to The Story of Tobacco. An attendee described how magical it was sitting in the dark, listening to “a true creation story, from a time before there were people.” She commented on the special way in which Fire itself promotes connection. So it was fitting that Firekeeper Linda Felch and her husband Randy Whitlock were given a special name for the Place where their hearth is located: Uthsijsta Kahwanta (ooh-th’ see-gee stahh cah’-wahn-tah). Translated from the (extinct) Susquehannock language it means: “The hill where people gather around fire to meet.”

This August 25, gathering again at Uthsijsta Kahwanta, we will ask to be told The Story of Corn. You are invited to join us.

The Sacred Story of Corn

In this special audience, Grandfather Fire will be requested to tell the Sacred Story of Corn. The original cultures of the Americas recognize a very special relationship between humans and Corn, which is identified with sustenance and prosperity. Hearing the sacred story of Corn will connect us more deeply with the life-giving energies around us.

Fire Speaks: An Audience with Grandfather Fire

In difficult times, an ancient ally is still here to help.

In indigenous cultures, when the need for community guidance is urgent, such as when a situation of great imbalance exists, there exist traditions of an individual being selected for Divine to speak through—so the guidance can be heard clearly.

Now is such a time.

In many original traditions in the Americas, the spirit of Fire is known as “Grandfather Fire.” Since 1999, Grandfather Fire has been making appearances at Sacred Fire gatherings around the world. He has chosen a Huichol shaman, don David Wiley, to be his spokesperson.

In a ceremonial setting, we invite Grandfather to share his guidance.

Grandfather is wise, funny, provoking, and astonishingly insightful. An evening with the elemental spirit of Fire is an opportunity to ask our most pressing questions about the mysteries of life and to deepen our connection with the sacred. Being in Grandfather’s presence can inspire us to manifest deeper courage in meeting the challenges of our lives.

Schedule

Arrival and Check In: 2:00 – 2:30 pm

Orientation: 2:30 – 5:00 pm

Potluck Dinner: 5:30 pm

Clean up: 6:30 pm

Audience with Grandfather Fire: 7:30 pm – 1 am

In the afternoon we will come together for an orientation and a question and answer session around the Fire. After a break for social time and a pot-luck dinner, in the evening we will gather around the Fire and create a ritual space to ignite and invite Grandfather Fire to speak with us.

Through Grandfather’s willingness to speak and the effects of two sacred ceremonial plants, (tobacco and the cacao), as well as our laughter, singing, stories and drumming, the Spirit of Fire is brought forth. The audience with Grandfather Fire is likely to last until after midnight.
