Women’s Fires: The Gift of Sisterhood

“A close friend introduced me to the Sacred Fire Santa Monica, CA (USA) community fires, which are held monthly. After my first visit, the Firekeeper announced an upcoming women’s fire. At first, I didn’t think that I would need to sit around a fire with a bunch of women, as I was perfectly satisfied with the community fire, and so I thought nothing more about it. One evening, however, I was invited by a friend to accompany her to the women’s fire. She was aware of personal trials I was experiencing and suggested I might attend to gain some much-needed strength.

Although I had been to several community fires with the same ladies, the women’s fire experience was definitely different. There was a magical sense of caring and inclusion that was so strong it filled me with pure energy. I felt emotion; not emotional to the point of crying, but if I had cried, I knew it would be okay to do so. It was more that I felt very aware of our sisterhood, and that we were all there for a soulful purpose, not only to be reenergized and renewed through the consecrated Fire, but through each other. This experience was life-changing. Even if the women present that night might be unaware how much their gift of stories and presence impacted and strengthened me as a woman, I have formed a special bond with each of them.

I will forever make the women’s fire part of my personal soul-cleansing, self-nourishing practice. During the community fires, I find that sharing may be tailored by women because of the presence of men. Yet among themselves, women feel understood by each other and can more openly discuss private matters and intimate feelings. I can see the difference in how we share and feel more open, unhindered and unleashed. That freedom is what makes the women’s fires so special. I now realize that I can have healthy, fun and growing relationships with other women, and that the particular setting of Sacred Fire women’s fires is ideal for this.”

Medicine for our Time

The Center for Disease Control just released a report noting that life expectancy for Americans actually declined 0.1 percent in 2017 compared to 2016, which translates to 70,000 more deaths. This was chiefly due to an increase in suicides and a dramatic increase in deaths due to synthetic opioid overdoses. This statistic is another sign that loneliness and alienation are taking a toll on our societal and individual wellbeing.

Gathering around Fire is the original form of ‘social networking.’ In this setting, we can get in touch with our essential human nature, and begin to experience the joy and sense of meaning that have sustained people for thousands of years. We can work things out, face-to-face, regarding issues that affect us close to home, in our own neighborhoods and cities.
Sacred Fire invites you to join us around the hearth to experience the warmth of relationships built and strengthened over time. Our monthly community fires are happening in 7 countries on 4 continents, and our mission is to grow this number exponentially. Sacred Fire: it is the medicine for our time. We hope you will join us!

Solstice Fires: Honoring the Rhythm of Nature in Community

For those living in the Northern Hemisphere, the natural rhythm of the seasons is leading toward the Winter Solstice, the longest night, on December 21. On the same day, those residing in the Southern Hemisphere will experience the Summer Solstice, the longest day. The world over, humans have used these seasonal milestones as an opportunity to reflect on how the rhythms of nature also live within people. The darkness marks a time for slowing down, for stillness and introspection, for assessing and for mending things. Gradually, with the movement toward the Spring Equinox, new seeds (physical and metaphorical) are planted and then, at Summer Solstice, there is a celebration of what has and is coming to fruition in our lives. At the Fall Equinox the harvest is celebrated and the process of letting go begins as humans once again move toward a period of rest. What is the season where you live and how you will you both align with and celebrate it?

Many Sacred Fire communities around the world will be marking this time of the year with a special Solstice Fire. If you can’t find a fire near you, invite a group of family and friends to participate in a thoughtful way to honor the rhythm of your lives.

Sacred Fire Women’s Fires Are Different

Eileen Gertz, who attends women’s fires in Asheville, NC USA, shares her story in our new post: “While I’ve done sweat lodges with women and am also part of a women’s group that meets monthly by phone, there is something different about circling up in the presence of a consecrated Fire. It has been a blessing, more than I even asked for.”
